Exploring the Costa del Sol: A Day on the Guadarranque River Trail
Yesterday we headed out on a beautiful and fairly easy hike along the Guadarranque river trail, near Castellar de la Frontera. I live by the beach, but this popular wooded trail is just few minutes inland from my house. The Costa del Sol has countless trails for nature lovers and explorers.
At the beginning of the trail is a popular café that serves a typical Andalucian breakfast of toast, eggs, and crushed tomatoes with a café con leche.
The Guadarranque trail follows the river through shaded woodland, offering both tranquility and surprises. About 2 hours walk in each direction, this particular trail is known for its Monarch butterflies, but we also saw peacocks, goats, a woodpecker, and even had to wait for some very large brown cows to pass who wanted a drink at the water’s edge. My standard poodle was excited to lead the way.
At the end of the trail was another popular lunch restaurant that served roast chicken, a delicious boar stew, and a simple egg dish for our vegetarian friend. And of course, we brought some kibble for the dogs. It’s always a bonus to have some good food along the way before heading back on the return walk to our starting point.
It was a perfect day with friends and the dogs and a reminder that exploring the Costa del Sol isn’t just about the coastline. Whether you’re hiking through shaded trails, enjoying local cuisine, or discovering wildlife, there’s always something new to experience in this incredible region.
